Puppies start solid food
Here’s what's new...
Puppies started solid (more like mushy) foods! We also have added a tote lid with dirt on it into the whelping pen. These are our first steps towards potty training. The dirt has wet paper towels from their pee and that helps them smell where to pee and poop and start learning that dirt=potty and soft=sleep. Newfoundlands are very clean when it comes to potty. They love to be "earth dirty", like mud, sand, water but they hate to be potty dirty. They are old enough now that they are trying to poop where they don't sleep, so this dirt method is helping them to understand where poop goes.
The level of potty training our puppies will have varies by just how much each pup wants to poop in the dirt and not his bed space. Our pups will never be 100% potty trained but each will at least understand this concept of no poop on blankets. :)
Potty training will still take time and patience, but why not start it a soon as possible right?
